Ready for recharge

ChristmasAs South Africa winds down for the year and to-do lists are replaced by Christmas wish lists, I am in a somewhat pensive mood.

I am reflecting on the things that made 2014 extraordinary. I am thinking about the many things people celebrate during this festive season, and I’m reminded of the American tradition of ‘Thanksgiving’ that also takes place during this time.

There are so many people who have impacted my life and business – some unwittingly. Being a firm believer in the power of corporate encouragement, I revel in the backing I received from colleagues and clients. I am also deeply gratified by the interactions with those attending professional development courses. To be able to draw and learn from the life experiences of others – even though I’m the one standing behind the lectern – is an amazing privilege. My mentors, as always, have enriched my life and, I would like to believe, the lives of others as I’ve followed their advice (and sometimes admonishment!).

I am not in the habit of making New Year’s resolutions – who wants to be faced by his lack of discipline by the third of January in any case?

Instead, I have opted to be reminded of every pearl of wisdom gathered during the year by incorporating these in some shape or form in my planning for 2015. From some people or businesses one learns how to do things right, from others one learns how not to do things… Both are valuable – particularly the muscles strengthened by dealing with the frustrations of the latter!

Wisdom gleaned, lessons learnt, goals achieved – I am planning to pay these forward, bolstered by the belief that given (or made aware of) the opportunity, every person has the power to change his/her bit of the world for the better.

Thank you for accompanying me on this journey – rest well, party hard, travel safely!
